ABSTRACT

Human skin is continually exposed to internal and external forces, dynamic as well as static. The skin is normally flexible and can resist mechanical trauma due to friction, pressure, vibration, suction and laceration to a considerable degree. However, an excess of these forces can abnormally affect the structure and function of the skin, setting the stage for the development of a skin disorder. Repetitive trauma can cause lichenification, hyperpigmentation, erythema, scaling, fissuring, blisters, ulceration and chronic alterations. Frictional dermatoses is an under-recognised entity with no clear-cut definition and encompasses a variety of terms such as frictional dermatitis, frictional melanosis, frictional pigmentary dermatoses and certain other named entities, many of which are confusing. The authors propose to define frictional dermatoses as ‘a group of disorders caused by repetitive trauma to the skin as a result of friction of varied aetiology which can have a wide range of cutaneous manifestations depending on the type of insult.’ The exact prevalence of frictional dermatoses as a separate entity is unknown. Authors who conducted this review include a group of dermatologists and post graduate students from various institutions. Literature was reviewed through PubMed, Medscape, Medline, ResearchGate and Google Scholar using the terms ‘frictional dermatitis,’ ‘friction and skin,’ ‘dermatoses and culture,’ ‘clothing dermatitis,’ ‘friction melanosis,’ ‘PPE induced dermatoses in COVID-19 era,’ etc. A total of 122 articles were reviewed and 100 articles among them were shortlisted and included in the study, after removing duplications. The review was followed up with further deliberation which resulted in the formulation of a new definition and classification of frictional dermatoses taking into account the morphology, histopathological characteristics, anatomical region affected and the major predisposing factors. The rising incidence of mechanical dermatoses in the COVID-19 era was also emphasised.

ABSTRACT

Abstract This study aimed to assess and correlate initial surface roughness and frictional resistance of rectangular CuNiTi wires inserted in different self-ligating brackets. The sample consisted of 40 bracket-wire sets (rectangular CuNiTi wires of 0.017" x 0.025" and passive self-ligating brackets) divided into four groups (n=10): metallic self-ligating bracket and metallic CuNiTi wire (G1); metallic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G2); esthetic self-ligating bracket and metallic wire (G3); esthetic self-ligating bracket and rhodium-coated CuNiTi wire (G4). The initial surface roughness of the wires was examined with a Surfcorder roughness meter, model SE1700. Later, frictional resistance was assessed in an Instron 4411 universal testing machine at a speed of 5 mm/min, in an aqueous medium at 35°C. Microscopic analyses of surface morphology were performed with scanning electron microscopy, using an LEO 1430, with magnifications of 1000X. Generalized linear models were applied, considering the 2 x 2 factorial (bracket type x wire type), at a 5% significance level. Regardless of bracket type, the groups with esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness than the groups with metallic wires (p<0.05). There was no significant difference between the different bracket-wire sets for frictional resistance and no significant correlation between frictional resistance and initial surface roughness in the environment studied. It is concluded that esthetic wires presented higher initial surface roughness but did not interfere with the frictional resistance between brackets and wires.

ABSTRACT

Aim: Bimaxillary protrusion is a common condition observed irrespective of race and ethnicity and is a chief concern for patients who seek orthodontic treatment. The aim of this study was to compare and evaluate changes in soft tissue structures and incisor positions in class I bimaxillary protrusion subjects undergoing orthodontic therapy when friction and frictionless mechanics were used. Methods: Two groups with a total of 40 patients aged 1830 years diagnosed with class I bimaxillary protrusion treated by extracting first premolars were considered for this study. Patients treated with friction mechanics were included in Group 1 and those treated with frictionless mechanics in Group 2. The digital lateral cephalograms were calibrated and analyzed using Nemoceph software. Selected landmarks were marked on pre- and post-treatment cephalograms and assessed for intra- and inter-group soft tissue and incisor position changes. Student's t-test was used to analyze the collected data using SPSS 20 software. Result: Intragroup comparison revealed significant changes in both groups. Inter-group comparison of the selected parameters between groups 1 and 2 showed differences but without any statistical significance, except for the inter-incisal angle. Conclusion: Pre- and post-treatment comparison analysis revealed significant soft tissue changes in both groups. However, the comparison between friction and frictionless mechanics showed no statistically significant changes

ABSTRACT

OBJECTIVE@#To study microstructure, friction and wear behaviors of silicon-lithium spray coating on the surface of zirconia ceramics and to preliminarily evaluate its esthetic so as to provide support and guidance for the clinical application.@*METHODS@#Zirconia ceramic specimens were randomly divided into three groups: coating group (two subgroups), polishing group (two subgroups), and glazing group (four subgroups), with 10 samples in each subgroup. The two subgroups of coating group were the zirconia ceramics with the untreated and preliminary polishing surfaces sprayed with silicon-lithium coating, respectively. The two subgroups of polishing group were preliminary polishing and fine polishing of zirconia ceramics, respectively. The four subgroups of glazing group were preliminarily polished zirconia ceramics glazed with Biomic and Stain/Glaze products, respectively; and untreated zirconia ceramics glazed with Biomic and Stain/Glaze products, respectively. The above 8 subgroups of zirconia ceramic specimens were used as friction pairs with 80 steatite ceramics for 50 000 chewing cycles under 50 N vertical load and artificial saliva lubrication using chewing simulation. Scanning electron microscope was used to observe the microstructure of the surface and section of the coating group, and the thickness of the coating and glazing were measured. The linear roughness of the coating and polishing groups was mea-sured using a laser confocal scanning microscope. Vickers hardness was measured using a microhardness tester and the esthetic of zirconia ceramic full crown sprayed with silicon-lithium coating was preliminarily evaluated. White light interferometer was used to measure the width, the maximum depth and the volume of the wear scars of each group, and the wear depth of steatite ceramics and wear rate of zirconia ceramic specimens were calculated. Kruskal-Wallis nonparametric test and Dunn's multiple comparisons test were used to analyze the wear depth of each group (α=0.05).@*RESULTS@#The microstructures of the silica-lithium spray coatings on the untreated and preliminarily polished zirconia ceramic surfaces showed the protruding defects, and the line roughness of coating group was larger than that of the polishing group. The median thickness of the silica-lithium spray coating on the preliminarily polished zirconia ceramic was 13.0 μm (interquartile range, IQR: 11.6, 17.9), while that of the silica-lithium spray coating on the untreated zirconia ceramic was 4.4 μm (IQR: 4.1, 4.7). The Vickers hardness and wear rate of the coating group were between the polishing group and the glazing group. The wear depths of the wear scars of steatite ceramics were the glazing group, coating group, and polishing group in descending order, and there was statistically significant difference between glazing and polishing groups (P < 0.05). With the increase of polishing procedure, the wear depth of steatite ceramics decreased in each subgroups. The orders of maximum depth and volume of wear scars of zirconia ceramic were the glazing group, coating group, and polishing group in descending order, and there was statistically significant difference in the maximum depth of wear scars between glazing and polishing groups (P < 0.05).@*CONCLUSION@#The silica-lithium spray coating on the zirconia ceramic, can be used as a new method for zirconia ceramic surface treatment, because it can increase the esthetic of zirconia ceramics compared with polishing and reduce the wear of steatite ceramics compared with glazing.

ABSTRACT

To study the physical properties of biomaterials like bony hard tissues through the propagation of elastic waves is one of the most successful method. With the help of internal friction measurement, we can study the processes such as recrystallization, annealing, quenching and tempering, plastic deformation and strain ageing. In the present investigation we calculate and -1 reported the internal friction loss (Q ) for all the six types of bovine compact bones for the first time in a single experiment by using the ultrasonic piezoelectric composite oscillator technique with the help of X-cut crystal in different physiological conditions. Significant variation is observed from bone to bone. This may be attributed to composition and mineral content of the bones. Peak temperature data also is also determined. Temperature variation of logarithmic decrement in X-cut quartz transducer is also verified with mounting of bovine compact bar shaped bone -1 samples. Change of internal friction (Q ) with temperature is also calculated to predict the mechanism of acoustic losses and phase transitions in these bony hard tissues. Internal friction measurements are also useful to obtain the information about imperfections in bony hard tissues. The present investigation constitutes a step towards the application of natural bovine bone ceramic materials for the transducer applications

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT: This study aimed to evaluate possible changes in final retention after nine sequences of insertion and removal (SIR) of a frictional Morse taper implant/abutment system, evaluating the force required for dissociating this set between sequences, and verifying possible deformations in the implant heads. Ten implants, 13 mm long and 3.3 mm in diameter, were coupled to a universal mechanical testing machine. Ten anti-rotational abutments, 13 mm long and 3.5 mm in diameter, were connected to the implants parallel to the long axis, using an instrument called beat-connection, and subjected to tensile tests and SEM analysis. The results were analyzed using the Kruskal-Wallis test with Dunn's post-test, and the significance level was set at 5 %. There was no statistically significant difference in final retention among the nine SIRs evaluated. The force needed to uncouple the abutment from the implant increased as SIRs were performed on all ten implants, and an increase of 29.03 % was observed in the ninth SIR compared to the first SIR. After SEM analysis, no significant deformations, fractures, or cracks were observed in the implant heads.

ABSTRACT

@#Orthodontic tooth movement is a complex physiological process based on periodontal tissue remodeling. Numerous factors, such as the anatomical characteristics of oral and maxillofacial complications, occlusal interference, mechanical factors and systematic factors, may play critical roles in orthodontic tooth movement, leading to tooth movement difficulty. In recent years, many scholars have focused on factors related to tooth movement difficulty, but current research mostly involves animal experiments and retrospective studies. Clinical trials of high-quality and evidence-based medicine studies are required. Although no sound theory system is available that is universally recognized and the mechanism of many factors remains debatable, alveolar bone defects, the maxillary sinus, the gingiva, tooth ankylosis, bone islands and friction may cause orthodontic tooth movement. Understanding the factors related to the difficulty of orthodontic tooth movement is advantageous to develop a more comprehensive personalized treatment plan for patients and achieve more efficient and safer tooth movement. In this paper, the current factors related to orthodontic tooth movement are reviewed to provide references for clinical orthodontic treatment.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT

Abstract Introduction and objective: Friction in orthodontics is produced by direct contact between the bracket, the wire, and the ligature. Friction reduces efficiency in orthodontic treatments. This research aims to compare the frictional resistance between conventional ceramic brackets and passive self-ligating ceramic brackets using a finite element method (FEM). Materials and methods: A total of 810 slidings were performed, combining conventional and self-ligating ceramic brackets, and stainless steel, nickel-titanium, and b-titanium alloy orthodontic wires of 0.016inch, 0.017x0.025inch, and 0.019x0.025inch. The maximum static frictional resistance (MSFR) mean was compared between the different brackets, wire, ligature, and bracket angulation combinations of 0°, 7°, and 13°. Results: The variables with the highest frictional behavior were 13°, b-titanium alloy, 0.017x0.025inch, and conventional ceramic brackets with an elastic ligatures. Conclusion: FEM is an adequate alternative for the prediction of MSRF in a various brackets, wire, ligating, and angulation combinations. The method allowed defining lower frictional resistance for self-ligating brackets, as well as a direct relationship between the increase in the angle and contact area between bracket and wire, with higher values of sliding resistance. It was established that a larger wire size does not imply a higher area of contact with the bracket.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Objective: This study investigated the effect of the condition of lubrication on the friction between brackets and NiTi archwires of different rounded cross-sections. Methods: Brackets (Roth, GAC) were affixed to a device connected to a universal testing machine into which segments of archwire were placed (NiTi, Nitinol, GAC) with cross-sections of 0.012-in, 0.016-in and 0.020-in. Once the wire was in the bracket slot, the following lubricants were applied: human saliva (HS: positive control), distilled water (DI), mucin-based (MUC) or carboxymethylcellulose-based (CMC) artificial saliva. In the negative control group, no lubricant was used. The combination between the wire cross-sections and the lubrication condition generated 15 groups with 15 samples each. Data were submitted to two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test. Results: There was no significant interaction between the wire cross-section and the condition of lubrication (p= 0.901). Irrespective of whether lubricants were used or not, there was a significant increase in friction with an increase in the cross-section of the wire (p< 0.001). For any wire, the group tested in the presence of MUC was not different from that in which HS was applied. On the other hand, when the application of lubricants was suppressed, significantly higher friction values were observed. The CMC group and the DI group demonstrated intermediate behavior. Conclusions: Friction increased with the increase of the cross-section of the NiTi archwire, but regardless of the archwire, friction with MUC artificial saliva was similar to that of HS and lower than in dry conditions.

ABSTRACT

Objective To study the friction between brackets and archwires and the influential factors. Methods To test the friction of six combinations of canine bracket and stainless steel archwire, and to calculate the critical contact angles for each combination. Results The friction maintains stability with slight changes when the contact angle is smaller than the critical contact angle. The friction increases linearly when the contact angle is larger than the critical contact angle. The friction of different combinations of bracket-archwire are different and the critical contact angles are also different. Conclusion The critical contact angle influences the friction between bracket and archwire significantly. The critical contact angle is relevant to both the structure of the bracket and the size of the archwire.

ABSTRACT

PURPOSE: The purpose of this finite element analysis study is to introduce the novel Lock screw system and analyze its mechanical property to see if it can prevent abutment screw loosening. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The Lock screw is a component tightened on the inside of the implant abutment which applies compressive force to the abutment screw head. To investigate the effect, modeling was done using CAD program and it was analyzed by finite element analysis under various load conditions. First, the preload was measured according to the tightening torque of the abutment screw then it was compared with the theoretical value to verify the analytical model. The validated analytical model was then divided into those with no external load and those with 178 N, and the tightening torque of the lock screw was changed to 10, 20, 30 Ncm respectively to examine the property of stress distribution on the implant components. RESULTS: Using Lock screw under various loading conditions did not produce equivalent stresses beyond the yield strength of the implant components. In addition, the axial load was increased at the abutment-abutment screw interface. CONCLUSION: The use of Lock screw does not exert excessive stress on the implant components and may increase the frictional force between the abutment-abutment screw interface, thus it is considered to prevent loosening of the abutment screw.

ABSTRACT

Orthopedic sutures are vital medical devices in repair surgeries of tendons and ligaments. Properties especially mechanical properties of orthopedic sutures have great impacts on the effects of tendon/ligament repairs. In this paper, clinically used orthopedic sutures including absorbable sutures and non-absorbable sutures were summarized firstly, by exploring literature about orthopedic sutures, and the mostly used orthopedic sutures are non-absorbable sutures. Then, based on the particularity of the repaired sites of orthopedic sutures, the in vitro mechanical test devices and evaluation method of orthopedic sutures were reviewed, mainly including the mechanical properties of sutures, suture-tissue, and suture-anchor. In addition, the characteristics of different evaluation method or test devices were compared. It was still difficult to evaluate the mechanical properties of orthopedic sutures due to the lack of instruments and test criteria.
